There is a non-refundable application fee of $65 that must be included at the time of application. The first step in getting that assistance is completing the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) form. That program awards assistance on the basis of need. Considering the finance status of the student and his parents as well as the actual cost of attendance at the school the student has selected, the program calculates how much each student should be able to contribute to his education. The Pell Grant is the most familiar component of the FAFSA program, but students may also qualify for the Stafford Loan, the Perkins Loan or a subsidized or non-subsidized student loan. After receiving the FAFSA awards letter, students should investigate scholarships and grants available. Many are offered at the University of Missouri through private donors. In addition, corporations often offer scholarships and grants to students who are pursuing degrees in their fields. An Internet search should result in several possible funding sources. Adult students who are employed may be able to get assistance from their employers in return for agreeing to work for the company for a specified time. Graduate students may be able to get assistantships that feature tuition waivers or that pay salaries. Student loans are used to fill the gap between “free” scholarship and grant money and the remaining financial obligation. These low-interest loans usually allow students to defer re-payment until after graduation. Students should be aware that although the loan does not have to be paid until after graduation, the interest on the loan accrues from the date of the loan inception. Additional information on tuition waivers, veteran’s benefits and other tuition considerations at the University of Missouri, Columbia, are available on the school website.
