State University of New York College at Geneseo

School of Business

This school is located in the Finger Lakes region of New York and is part of the University of New York system of campuses. It has an enrollment of approximately 5500 students and is considered to be New York’s public honors college. SUNY College at Geneseo was ranked by US News and World Report as #2 of Top Regional Colleges, North. The School of Business boasts small classes and has a student-managed investment fund and a new entrepreneurship program called Idea2Venture which assists students in visualizing and implementing programs for new business enterprises.

Master of Science in Accounting

This program meets the New York requirements for CPA licensure. Applicants must have a baccalaureate degree in accounting. The school will not accept students with degrees in general business studies, economics, business communications or other business disciplines. This is a full-time, one-year academic program. Graduates of this program need only one more year to satisfy the experience requirement of New York CPA licensure. There are thirty credit hours in the degree program. Twelve are in management, fifteen are in accounting and three are in economics. The cost of the Master of Science degree at the College of Geneseo is $10, 665.

State University of New York at Old Westbury

School of Business

This university has an enrollment of approximately 4,400 students. It is ranked, by US News and World Report, in the second tier of National Liberal Arts Colleges. The School of Business constantly updates their curriculum to meet the demands of the rapidly-changing world of technology, and faculty in the business school are encouraged to experiment with innovative methods of teaching. Classes are interactive in nature as well. In addition to teaching faculty, the school emphasizes the importance of advisors to academic success and one area of focus is student support services.

Master of Science in Accounting

This program is intended for accounting and non-accounting students to advance in their careers or to begin new careers in accounting. The degree is offered in two tracks. The first is intended for students who hold an undergraduate degree in accounting. This track contains 30 credit hours. This program is held over two full semesters and two summer sessions, but students who have an undergraduate accounting degree can finish in one year. Students who take the master’s degree program without the undergraduate degree in accounting must complete 51 credit hours to satisfy the graduation requirements. They must take foundational courses in financial accounting, financial accounting theory, cost accounting and management application. Advanced governmental and not-for-profit accounting, tax and public accounting and in the legal standards and regulations around accounting. After these fundamental courses are completed, the programs are identical.

State University of New York Institute of Technology

Graduate Programs

This school was ranked by US News and World Report as a Top University, North. It has a student body of approximately 13,000 students. The mission of the university is to provide career-oriented education to students. The Institute of Technology is New York’s public polytechnic. It prides itself on academic/governmental/business collaboration, showcased in the new Computer Chip Commercialization Center which is expected to bring in hundreds of high-tech jobs and to provide students with a cutting-edge workforce training. Annual undergraduate tuition is $23,020.

Master Science (MS) in Accountancy

This degree is offered online as a 33-credit program consisting of 11 courses. It is intended to be pursued full or part-time. The program, along with the undergraduate requisites, satisfies the 150 credit hour requirements for the New York licensure. The program was created in response to two demands. One is the increase of people with bachelor’s degrees in their profession who wanted to obtain more advanced training, and the other is the need for more credits above undergraduate level to meet the licensure minimum and allow students to sit for the CPA and CMA exams. Students without a background in accounting may take the degree program but they must complete additional coursework. The 30 credit degree includes 15 credits in the accounting core, 15 in business and three electives. It prepares students for careers as public accountants, corporate accounting or accounting for non-profits, and governmental accounting. Angel, the online tool through which the business school offers the degree, is user-friendly and easy to navigate.

Stony Brook University, State University of New York

College of Business

U.S. News and World Report ranked this school in the top 100 universities in the US and one of the top 35 public universities. Ninety-eight percent of the full-time instructors hold doctoral degrees in their professions. The school is responsible for more than 1900 inventions and 550 U.S. patents. The College of Business houses the Innovation Center where students and faculty from Stony Brook collaborate with Long Island Entrepreneurs in business ideas. All of the business school programs are taught by senior faculty members with the exception of key executives from corporations who serve as visiting instructors.

Master of Business Administration (MBA), Accounting Concentration

This program “combines business curriculum with personal attention from expert faculty.” The focus is on innovation, projects in business, real-world business approach to problems and teamwork. It is offered in a full-time day-class format or part-time evenings and on weekends. The degree contains either 60 credits or 48 credits. Students who have five or more years of experience in the field can pursue the 48 credit path. The 60-credit program includes 18 three-credit courses (11 required core and six electives) and six credits in a group project. Students may choose an internship or study-abroad. These electives are usually completed during the summer between the first and second year of the program. The 48 hour degree program includes 15 three-credit courses (11 required and four electives) and a three-credit group project. One of the electives chosen must be in the concentration. Tuition for the degree is $6610.

Syracuse University

Whitman School of Management

This private, coeducational university has an enrollment of more than 21,000 students. There are 1043 full-time faculty members of which 86 percent hold doctoral degrees. Whitman School of Management is highly-ranked: the 2013 Princeton Review ranked it as #4 in their “Best Entrepreneurial Programs” list, and The Financial Times listed it as number nine among the best online MBAs. Courses at the school are offered online, or in a traditional format and core business classes are integrated into the program during the freshman year instead of waiting until the sophomore year to begin.

Master of Business Administration (MBA) Accounting

This class is entirely online through live classes taught by Whitman faculty. The school addresses the anonymity of online education with profiles students and faculty create online that allow them to get to know one another before beginning classes. The classes themselves are small, and there are weekly class discussions via forums. The program is 54 credit hours. A student who completes two courses each semester will finish the degree in two years. All students must attend three, three-day residencies during the program which are offered in many cities and even international locations. Students have the opportunity to specialize to advance their careers. Graduates have knowledge and practice in areas such as taxation, financial reporting and auditing and cost-accounting, and the program includes forensic and International auditing so that students may be abreast of new developments in the accounting profession.

Master of Science (MS) in Accounting

This practical degree program is intended to give students the knowledge and the required credits to sit for the CPA exam. Students with a background in accounting can finish the degree in one year. Without an accounting background, it can take up to an additional year to complete the program, depending upon the accounting and business coursework completed in the baccalaureate degree. The curriculum was recently redesigned to accommodate developments in technology. It includes courses in financial statement analysis, strategic cost analysis, advanced auditing, taxes and business strategies, economics and statistics as well as a number of electives. Students finishing the degree in one year take fifteen credits both fall and spring semesters. The plan is finished in 16 months by taking 9 credits during the fall and spring, an internship during the summer and 9 more credits the last fall semester. The cost of the degree for full-time, one-year program is $1,924 per credit. Tuition for thirty credits is $38,820.

The College at Brockport, State University of New York

School of Business and Economics

The Princeton Review ranks this school as one of the “Best in the Northeast.” Enrollment is around 7200. The school offers 120 study-abroad opportunities on seven continents. Among other points of ride for the School of Business and Economics are small class size, and its focus on critical thinking, business ethics and social responsibility. The school also offers career planning assistance and professional skills development programs.

Master of Science in Forensic Accounting

This degree program consists of ten, three-credit courses that focus on forensic accounting, fraud investigation and other business topics. It is held Monday through Thursday evenings and students may enter the program in fall or spring semesters. If students intend to complete the program in one year, however, they must enter during the fall semester. Candidates for the degree must have a baccalaureate degree in business with a major in accounting. The program is intended for students who want careers in forensic accounting as well as for students who want more traditional careers in accounting such as being CPA, teaching, or working in industry, governmental or non-profit accounting. Graduate tuition is $5185 in-state and $10,095 non-resident, but the cost depends upon how long it takes students to finish a degree and a more reliable figure is $432 per credit hour resident and $841 per credit non-resident.

The College of St. Rose

Heuther School of Business

This private, independent coeducational college is not owned by a church, but is sponsored by the Sisters of St. Joseph, Carondelet, Albany Province. US News and World Report ranks the school as #37 of Regional Universities, North. The student-to faculty ratio is 13:1 and 98 percent of the classes have less than 30 students. The college sponsors “Reach-Out Days” to encourage students to do community service projects.

Master of Science in Accounting

This degree program consists of thirty credits and is intended to give students the knowledge and the credit hours they need to sit for the CPA or CMA exams. It satisfies one year of the two-year experience requirement for licensure. There are two sets of requirements: business and accounting courses for the CPA program and additional courses required of all candidates for the Master of Science in Accounting degree. There are 15 graduate business classes and 25 accounting classes. All students must complete Principles of Accounting, Intermediate Accounting I and II, Computer Science and other courses. Tuition for the program is #775 per credit.
