This list of accredited accounting degree programs in New Mexico will help prospective students decide upon which program they want to investigate further. As both schools listed here are state universities, they are larger schools, but tuition is lower than at private institutions. Tuition will vary, however, for graduate programs because many of the courses have prerequisites which will have to be completed and the tuition for which is not figured into the base cost. The time in which a degree is completed also affects the cost, so it may be worth the while to consider accelerated programs.

Master in Accountancy

This is a newly designed degree program to replace the traditional master’s accounting degree which no longer has the depth or breadth to address the increasingly complex nature of today’s global business world. As evidence of this, the school cites the emergence of new regulatory organizations and standards for accounting. This 30-credit program is intended for those students who want an accredited accounting degree program in New Mexico to complete the 150 hours required to sit for the CPA exam. All students are required to take an elementary statistics class. Beyond that there are foundational courses that may be waived upon proof of successful completion of the skills presented in the classes. There are then 30 core class requisites. Eighteen of these are in accounting classes at a level over 503, and the remaining 12 electives are to be chosen with the assistance of an accounting advisor.

Master of Accounting

The Master of Accounting degree has four tracks. The Integrated BBA/MACCT degree allows students to earn a BBA and a master’s in accounting in five years. It is intended for students with a clear career choice and will enable them to meet the 150-hour requirement to sit for the CPA upon graduation. The Advanced Track is for students who have already earned a BBA with a concentration in accounting, which is also a requisite for the Information Assurance Track. There is a Professional Track for those students who have an undergraduate degree in a discipline other than accounting and the Tax Track is for those who hold a BBA with an accounting concentration and who want to pursue taxes as a career. All of the concentrations are 33 credit-hour programs but actual credit requirements will reflect unmet proficiency requirements in foundation courses.
