Badge - Master's in Accounting Degrees

Master’s in Accounting Staff
July 2015

There are two primary reasons someone would choose to get a master’s degree in accounting: to prepare for a certification exam, or to generally enhance their knowledge of business and finance. People who want to become certified public accountants, certified fraud examiners, or certified management accountants will all need to earn a master’s degree in accounting. This is because most states require students to earn a minimum number of credits in accounting coursework before sitting for the certification exam. On the other hand, an MAcc or MBA in Accounting can be incredibly useful for current business professionals who want to move up the career ladder – for example into a management position or a job with more financial responsibility.

Online master’s accounting programs are particularly useful because they enable students to continue their education without putting their career plans on hold. Because many MAcc and MBA degrees are available without any required face-to-face visits, they are often ideal choices for business professionals and adult learners.

We constructed this ranking by first acquiring a list of all the online master’s degrees in accounting within the United States. We used comprehensive search tools on College Navigator combined with our own Google searches to find and verify all qualifying programs. We also checked to ensure that all the programs we considered are truly online; in other words “hybrid” degrees and those that require regular campus visits for classes were not eligible.

Finally, we collected the qualifying schools’ tuition information from College Navigator and ranked them according to affordability. Note that we also considered schools’ additional fees in these calculations, although in most cases these costs are minor compared to the price of tuition. As such, we listed tuition and fees as a single number in the ranking below. When ranking public schools we averaged their in-state and out-of-state tuition rates (fees are the same regardless of residency) in order to place them appropriately. However, when writing our descriptions we listed both rates so you can more accurately determine what you will need to pay. That being said, remember that many online colleges offer special distance education rates, scholarships, loans, and discounts, so be sure to check with the universities before applying or submitting payment!
